According to Paul Savramis, Donate Life America is a not-for-profit alliance of state teams and national organizations dedicated to increasing the donation of tissue, eye and organs. The group’s mission is to encourage people to sign up for their home state’s donor registry. Their work includes donor registry supervision, Division of Motor Vehicles outreach and school education. The issue is not the organization or its mission, it’s how to help with awareness of both.
Former Rising Stars participant and current Rising Stars ambassador Jay Williams received the Donate Life Champion award in 2012, reports Paul Savramis. A graduate of Duke University, Williams was named national player of the year in men’s basketball for the 2001-2002 season. He played professionally for the Chicago Bulls and the New Jersey Nets before accepting an analyst role with ESPN in 2008. Jay’s involvement with Donate Life is also a personal one. His mother and acting Rising Stars President Althea Williams is a kidney transplant recipient.
The Donate Life Champion award is presented to members of the athletic community who serve as key supporters of eye, organ and tissue donation. A number of teams, athletes and other inspirational role models have encouraged people to give the gifts of life, mobility and sight. According to Paul Savramis, the roster of Donate Life Champions also includes another Rising Stars Hall of Famer, NBA superstar, Michael Jordan from the Chicago Bulls.
As a result of the outreach efforts by Donate Life America, people are able to gain a greater understanding of tissue, eye and organ donation. The responsibilities of Donate Life America include the following:
- Offer the public a direct connection to donation professionals
- Collaborate with media outlets to report on donating stories
- Raise funds to help support education programs
- Support the DMV by hosting staff training and presenting registry information
- Deliver outreach programs in a diverse range of communities
- Record donation submissions in the donor registry
- Share educational programs with U.S. high schools in driver’s education courses
Paul Savramis reports that Donate Life America has advanced this cause by providing accurate facts and statistics while clearing up the most common misconceptions about tissue, eye and organ donation. At this time, more than 120,000 Americans are awaiting a potentially life-saving organ transplant. A true champion for Donate Life America and its various activities, Paul Savramis invites the friends and supporters of Rising Stars to join the donor registry and help save lives.
